Riverside Care Home Residents, Morpeth

Riverside Villanelle

The place where everybody calls us pet,
where history lingers flowing like a stream.
We all still live here: haven’t vanished yet.

I wonder if my life has been a dream,
as memories mingle, slip and disagree.
The place where everybody calls us pet.

Look at us now: we are not what we seem.
Behind these masks are things you cannot see:
we all still live here: haven’t vanished yet.

Although you might think we have drunk the cream,
we choose to be instead of not to be.
The place where everybody calls us pet.

We’re staying here until we float downstream.
To later living well, we have the key.
We all still live here: haven’t vanished yet.

Until we’re wanted in the sunbeam team,
returning rivers to the mother sea.
The place where everybody calls us pet.
We all still live here: haven’t vanished yet.

Without libraries what have we? We have no past and no future. Ray Bradbury, science fiction writer
